Rebuilding Damaged Window Openings & Installing Pella Lifestyle Windows in La Grange, IL

A window and patio door renovation can sometimes reveal conditions that no one can see until the existing materials are removed. That is exactly what happened during this Valdicass project in La Grange, Illinois.

The homeowners were planning a significant transformation using Pella® Lifestyle Series windows and a patio door, including a dramatic black window configuration designed to bring more natural light into the home and give the exterior a more contemporary appearance.

Once demolition began, however, the project revealed something neither the homeowners nor our team had anticipated: significant concealed deterioration within portions of the existing wall framing.

Instead of covering the damaged areas and continuing the installation, Valdicass opened the affected portions of the wall, addressed the conditions uncovered, rebuilt the necessary framing, prepared the openings, and then installed the new Pella products.

The result was more than a window replacement. It became a comprehensive renovation of the openings themselves, followed by a dramatic architectural transformation of the home.

Project Overview

Location: La Grange, Illinois
Project Type: Window, Patio Door & Opening Reconstruction
Window Series: Pella Lifestyle Series
Window Material: Wood with aluminum-clad exterior
Exterior Finish: Black
Interior Finish: Black-stained pine
Additional Work: Removal, reconstruction, and preparation of affected wall openings
Installation Contractor: Valdicass

The project incorporated a large Pella Lifestyle window assembly, a Pella Lifestyle sliding patio door with a fixed transom above, and an additional direct-set fixed window. The Pella order specified black EnduraClad® exteriors and black-stained pine interiors throughout the principal products.

Transforming the Existing Openings

The original home had a much more traditional exterior configuration, with smaller windows surrounded by light-colored trim.

The renovation was designed to create a substantially different architectural appearance. The new black Pella products introduce larger glass areas, stronger visual lines, and a contemporary contrast against the home’s gray exterior.

But getting from the original configuration to the finished design required considerably more work than simply installing replacement windows.

Unexpected Damage Discovered During Demolition

Before demolition began, neither the homeowners nor Valdicass anticipated the extent of the deterioration concealed behind the existing finished surfaces.

Once we removed the existing materials and exposed the wall cavities, substantial deterioration became visible in portions of the existing framing.

Because these conditions were concealed behind the exterior and interior finishes, we could not see their full extent before demolition.La Grange deteriorated window framing

Significant deterioration became visible only after we removed the existing materials and opened the wall assembly.

This is one reason the condition of the opening itself matters during a major window and door renovation.

A high-quality window can only perform as intended when the surrounding opening provides an appropriate foundation for installation.

Rather than conceal the condition behind the new products, the team addressed the affected areas before continuing installation.

Rebuilding the Openings

With the deteriorated material exposed, the project moved into reconstruction.

Sections of the wall were opened so the team could remove the affected framing and properly rebuild and prepare the openings for the new Pella products.La Grange hidden wall damage

The demolition process exposed deterioration within portions of the existing wall framing.

Valdicass reconstructed the affected portions of the openings before installing the new window and patio door.

The project’s framing documentation identifies dedicated rough openings and framing components for the front window and rear patio door areas, including headers, king studs, jack studs, and cripple studs.

This stage is important because much of the work homeowners never see is what prepares the home for the finished product.

Preparing the Home for the New Pella Windows

After reconstruction, the team can prepare the openings for installation.

The exterior construction photographs document the progression from demolition and exposed framing to reconstructed openings, exterior preparation, and installation of the new Pella products.

New framing and preparation are underway before installation of the Pella Lifestyle products.

The project was no longer simply about replacing what was there before. It was about creating properly prepared openings for a substantially different window and patio door design.

The New Pella Lifestyle Window Configuration

One of the most visually significant elements of the project is the large Pella Lifestyle Series window configuration.

The documented rough opening was approximately 82¾ inches wide by 88¾ inches high. The assembly combined two operable awning units with two fixed units, creating a large glass composition while still providing ventilation through the operable sections.

The homeowners selected:

  • Pella Lifestyle Series wood windows
  • Black EnduraClad exterior
  • Black-stained pine interior
  • Advanced Low-E insulating glass with argon
  • InView™ screens on the operable awning windows
  • Black grilles-between-the-glass on portions of the fixed-window configuration

The black-on-black configuration was an especially important design choice.

Instead of trying to make the new windows disappear into the existing exterior, the dark frames became an architectural feature.

The new black Pella Lifestyle window configuration was installed after the opening was reconstructed.

More Glass and a Completely Different Exterior Appearance

Compare the original elevation with the completed installation, and the architectural difference is substantial.

The previous opening was visually divided by lighter framing and trim. The new configuration creates a much stronger connection between the interior and exterior through a larger expanse of glass and narrow, dark visual lines.

The black frames also provide contrast against the gray siding.

La Grange after

The new Pella Lifestyle configuration dramatically changes the appearance of this portion of the La Grange home.

This is exactly why window selection should involve more than choosing a replacement product based only on dimensions.

Window style, proportions, frame color, grille configuration and the relationship between multiple units can all influence the architecture of a home.

Pella Lifestyle Sliding Patio Door With Transom

The project also included a Pella Lifestyle Series patio door installation.

The documented configuration used a roughly 72-inch-wide by 97-inch-high rough opening and combined a contemporary double sliding patio door with a fixed transom above.

Like the window configuration, the patio door featured:

  • Black EnduraClad exterior
  • Black-stained interior
  • Advanced Low-E insulating glass with argon
  • InView sliding screen
  • Black grille detailing

La Grange patio door

The completed Pella Lifestyle patio door with fixed transom continues the black architectural theme used throughout the project.

The transom increases the glass area vertically while maintaining door functionality below.

The result is a tall, contemporary opening that brings additional natural light into the interior.

An Additional Pella Lifestyle Fixed Window

A smaller direct-set fixed Pella Lifestyle window was also included in the project.

The documented unit continued the same design language with a black EnduraClad exterior and black-stained pine interior, helping maintain consistency between the different openings.

That consistency is important on a project like this. Although the openings serve different purposes, the windows and patio door read as parts of the same overall renovation.

Why Full-Frame Work Can Reveal Hidden Conditions

One of the most important lessons from this La Grange project is that homeowners cannot always know what exists behind a finished wall.

Exterior trim, siding, interior finishes, and an existing window or door can conceal conditions that aren’t visible during an initial consultation.

When those materials are removed during a more comprehensive renovation, previously hidden deterioration may become visible.

That doesn’t mean every full-frame window replacement will uncover structural deterioration. It means the installation team must be prepared to evaluate the conditions it encounters once the opening is exposed.

For this home, the unexpected discovery changed the amount of work required before installation could proceed.

And that work became an important part of the project.

What Homeowners Usually Don’t See in the Finished Photograph

The final photographs show black Pella windows, a contemporary patio door, gray siding and clean exterior details.

What they don’t show is equally important.

Behind those finished surfaces was demolition, discovery, reconstruction, framing and careful preparation of the openings.

This is why Valdicass approaches replacement windows as an installation project—not simply a product purchase.

From Unexpected Conditions to a Finished Transformation

The completed project bears little resemblance to what was uncovered during demolition.

The deteriorated areas are no longer visible. Neither is the new framing used to rebuild the openings.

What remains visible is the finished architecture: expansive glass, black Pella frames, a new patio door configuration, and a dramatically updated exterior.

For the homeowners, the project ultimately delivered the transformation they were seeking.

For our team, it also showed something equally important: when unexpected conditions surface during a renovation, the work behind the finished product matters.
