Full-Frame Replacement Windows
Choosing the right window is important—but choosing the right installation method can be just as important.
With a full-frame window replacement, the existing window unit is removed down to the rough opening, including the existing frame and components that would remain during a typical pocket or insert replacement. This gives the installer access to the opening so they can evaluate its condition and properly prepare it before installing the new window.
At Valdicass, we specialize in professional full-frame and pocket replacement window installation throughout Chicago and the surrounding suburbs. As a Pella Platinum Elite Certified Contractor serving Chicagoland homeowners since 1997, we help homeowners choose the right installation method for their home—not simply which window to purchase.
What Is a Full-Frame Window Replacement?
A full-frame replacement involves removing the existing window assembly rather than installing a new window inside the existing frame.
Depending on the home’s construction and existing conditions, the process may include removal of the existing:
- Window sash
- Existing window frame
- Interior trim or casing as required
- Exterior trim or brickmould as required
- Existing insulation and sealants surrounding the window
Once the existing assembly is removed, the rough opening is accessible for inspection and preparation before installing the new window.
This is one of the biggest advantages of full-frame replacement: we can see what’s behind the old window.
When Should You Consider Full-Frame Replacement?
Not every window needs a full-frame installation. However, in some situations, it may be the better approach.
Deteriorated or Damaged Existing Frames
If the existing window frame, sill, trim, or surrounding materials show deterioration, water damage, or other problems, installing a new window inside that existing frame may not address the underlying condition.
Full-frame replacement provides greater access to evaluate the opening.
Windows That Are Out of Square
Older homes can settle over time. Existing window openings may no longer be perfectly square or level.
Removing the complete window assembly allows our installers to evaluate and prepare the opening for the new window.
Changing the Window Size or Configuration
If you’re changing a window’s size, style, or configuration, full-frame installation may be required.
For example, a homeowner may want to replace an existing window with a larger unit, change the operating style, or redesign a group of windows.
Preserving Maximum Glass Area
Pocket replacement installs a new window within the existing window frame. Because another frame is introduced inside the original opening, you may lose some visible glass area.
Full-frame replacement can offer more flexibility to maximize the new window within the available rough opening.
You’re Already Renovating the Interior or Exterior
Full-frame replacement can also make sense when you’re already renovating siding, exterior trim, or interior finishes, because more of the existing window assembly is accessible.
Full-Frame vs. Pocket Replacement Windows
Both installation methods can be appropriate. The right choice depends on the condition of the existing windows and your project goals.
Pocket or insert replacement generally leaves the existing window frame in place and installs the new window within that frame. It can be an excellent option when the existing frame is structurally sound, and the homeowner wants to minimize disturbance to surrounding finishes.
Full-frame replacement removes the existing window assembly and exposes the rough opening. It provides greater access for inspection, preparation, insulation, flashing, sealing, and installation of the new window system.
At Valdicass, we don’t believe every home should automatically receive the same installation method. We evaluate existing conditions and recommend an approach based on each project.
How a Full-Frame Window Is Replaced
The exact installation process varies depending on the home’s construction, exterior materials, window type, and existing conditions. A typical project may include:
- Protect the work area
Before removal begins, our team protects surrounding interior surfaces, flooring, furniture, and the work area as needed. - Remove the existing window
We carefully remove the sash, frame, trim, and other necessary components of the existing window. - Inspect the rough opening
With the old window removed, the opening can be evaluated for previously concealed conditions. - Prepare the opening
Prepare the opening as needed for proper positioning and installation of the new window. - Install and secure the new window
Position, level, square, secure, and install the new window according to applicable installation requirements. - Flash, insulate, and seal
Use appropriate flashing, insulation, and sealants as required by the installation conditions and window system. - Finish the interior and exterior
Complete interior and exterior trim and finishing components according to the project scope. - Final inspection and cleanup
The completed installation is checked for operation and finishing, and the work area is cleaned.
